TRADERS are fuming that a car park has been resurfaced ahead of this weekend’s Thundersprint, when Northwich’s roads need urgent attention.

The car park at Baron’s Quay is used for the main racing event of the Thundersprint, on Sunday, but it had been left in a bad state after the freezing winter.

But town traders and motorcyclists have said that roads are in a mess, too, and that they should have been Cheshire West and Chester Council’s top priority.

Bernie Horrigan, a motorcyclist who lives in Weaverham and works in Northwich, said: “I’m a 100 per cent motorbiker and the roads around Northwich and Cheshire are terrible – they’re full of pot holes.

“It’s funny how the council can find the money for resurfacing a car park and not for roads – it’s a disgrace.”

A CWAC spokesman told the Guardian that if the car park had not been resurfaced, the Thundersprint may have been cancelled.

He said: “The car park surface had deteriorated during the severe winter and we were informed by Thundersprint organisers that the event would be in danger, if there were doubts about the safety of the track.

“We took the view that it was vital to avoid the risk of cancellation, simply because the event attracts thousands of visitors, boosts the local economy and puts Northwich on the international stage.”

Scientists from Chester Zoo are looking for rare wildlife in a Cheshire park as part of a two-day mammal hunt.

Naturalists from the zoo and Cheshire Mammal Group are undertaking the survey in 100-acres around Nunsmere Hall Hotel at Oakmere, near Northwich.

Experts believe the mere is one of the last oases of the Mersey Forest and hope it provides habitat for a wide diversity of animals.

It is hoped they will find signs of water voles, stoats and polecats.

Polecats were once hunted because they preyed on game but now their numbers are increasing, experts said.

They are more usually found in north Wales.

Sarah Bird, Chester Zoo's biodiversity officer, said: "Apart from the mammals the naturalist in the group will also be taking a look at the general wildlife including plants, insects and birds.

"There may be lots of interesting wildlife we will certainly be looking out anything exciting and unusual."

PATIENTS are being moved out of the inpatients unit at Northwich’s infirmary today, Wednesday.

The patients are being moved to a dedicated ward at Leighton Hospital while electrical tests are being carried out at the unit, which is more than 100 years old.

But campaigners fear that the unit will not pass its inspection and will never reopen.

Liam Byrne, spokesman for Save Our Northwich Inpatients Campaign (SONIC), said: “Dependent on the test results, it is possible that the wards will be closed down without any planned date for when they will be reopened or replaced.

“If this happens, it will be a tragedy for the town because it would be the loss of a much loved facility which has served the community well over many generations.

“It should also make local people very angry because, once again, Northwich is being treated shamefully.”
